HOUSTON — When UTSA needed one final stop Saturday night, its defense delivered.
The Roadrunners turned away Rice on its final possession to preserve a 16-14 victory at First Community Stadium, opening American Conference play with a win and improving to 4-1 for their best five-game start since 2021.
Rice had an opportunity to steal the game after UTSA missed a field goal with less than seven minutes remaining, but the Roadrunners never allowed the Owls to mount the decisive drive.
UTSA forced a punt on Rice’s next possession before the Owls got the ball one final time.
That was when the Roadrunners' pass rush took over.
Darion White and Camron Cooper recorded sacks to leave Rice facing fourth-and-13 from its own 15-yard line in the final minute. Quarterback Jacurri Brown scrambled for eight yards on fourth down, but White brought him down short of the marker to seal the victory.
It was a fitting ending for a night largely controlled by UTSA's defense.
The Roadrunners limited Rice to 232 yards of total offense and just 88 through the air. UTSA recorded a season-high 10 tackles for loss and three sacks.
UTSA also made an impact almost immediately.
On Rice's second offensive play, Cooper recovered a fumble at the Owls' 22-yard line. The Roadrunners turned the takeaway into points four plays later when Michael Petro connected on a 32-yard field goal.
Rice answered late in the opening quarter when Brown broke free for a 38-yard touchdown run, giving the Owls a 7-6 advantage.
The lead didn't last long.
Will Henderson III scored on a 12-yard run early in the second quarter, putting UTSA back in front, 13-7. Petro later added a 22-yard field goal to send the Roadrunners into halftime with a 16-7 advantage.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Rice made things interesting early in the fourth.
The Owls put together a methodical 20-play, 88-yard possession that drained more than eight minutes off the clock. Brown finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, cutting UTSA's lead to 16-14 with 13:35 remaining.
UTSA responded by taking more than six minutes off the clock on its next possession, although the Roadrunners came away empty after a missed field goal.
That left the outcome in the hands of the defense — and the unit responded.
UTSA finished with three sacks, one each from Jeremiah Bailey, Cooper and White. Bailey also recorded 2.5 tackles for loss, while Cooper added two tackles for loss to go along with his fumble recovery.
White, Elijah Newell and Brandon Tucker each finished with seven tackles.
Offensively, UTSA leaned heavily on its running game.
The Roadrunners rushed for 166 yards, led by Henderson's 90 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Brandon High Jr. added 29 yards, Mekhi Anderson rushed for 23 and A'Marion Peterson contributed 22.
UTSA finished with 314 total yards and controlled the ball for more than 32 minutes.
The win continued the Roadrunners' recent success against their in-state conference rival. UTSA is now 10-4 all-time against Rice and 5-2 in conference openers under head coach Jeff Traylor.
More importantly, the Roadrunners leave Houston with their first conference win and a 4-1 record as the schedule quickly turns toward another important matchup.
UTSA returns to the Alamodome on Thursday night to host South Florida. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with the game set for a national broadcast on ESPN.
