UIW opens 2026 season with record-setting 76-14 rout

The UIW Cardinals opened their 2026 football season Saturday with little suspense, while making a new entry in the program's record book.

Driving the news: UIW overwhelmed Oklahoma Panhandle State 76-14 at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium, setting a program record for points in a game.

The Cardinals surpassed the previous mark of 73 points, set against Houston Christian in 2022.

Why it matters: Blowouts against overmatched opponents come with an obvious caveat, but UIW did about everything it could have been expected to do in its first game of the year.

• The Cardinals scored on offense, defense, and special teams, built a 62-0 halftime lead, and were able to turn much of the second half over to their reserves.
• For a program trying to return to the top tier of the FCS, it was a convincing, if limited, first data point.

How it happened: The game got away from Oklahoma Panhandle State almost immediately.

• UIW scored 41 points in the first quarter while its offense possessed the ball for only 2 minutes and 7 seconds.
• Transfer Jayden Hibbler provided the first score before the offense had even taken the field, returning a punt 58 yards for a touchdown.
• Quarterback Emmett Brown then threw three first-quarter touchdown passes, connecting with Price Morgan from 22 yards, Isaiah Champagne from 51, and Jacob Emmers from 48.

The standout: Hibbler's UIW debut was difficult to miss.

• The West Texas A&M transfer added a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter, becoming just the second Cardinal to return two punts for touchdowns in the same game.

By the numbers: UIW outgained the Aggies 474-157, including a 261 to minus-15 advantage on the ground.

• The Cardinals' defense finished with 10 tackles for loss and four sacks while limiting OPSU to seven first downs.
• Brown completed 5 of 7 passes for 127 yards, three touchdowns and an interception before UIW turned to its backups. Turner led the ground game with 81 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.

Zoom out: The final score says more about the gap between the two teams than it does about where UIW belongs in the national FCS picture.

Oklahoma Panhandle State competes at the NAIA level. UIW, meanwhile, has spent the past several seasons building itself into an FCS contender.

Saturday was a game the Cardinals were supposed to control. They did, emphatically.

What they're saying: Head coach Clint Killough focused less on the record and more on what his team did with its first opportunity of the season.

“You work long years just to get 12 opportunities. So I'm glad we took advantage of it,” Killough said after the game, adding that he was pleased with the Cardinals' energy and focus.

Yes, but: The degree of difficulty is about to change considerably. The Cardinals' next opponent, Northern Arizona, opened its season Saturday by erasing a 21-point deficit in a 34-27 win over Eastern Washington.

UIW has an early bye next weekend before traveling to Flagstaff to face No. 24 Northern Arizona on Sept. 12.

For opening night, UIW did exactly what a contender is supposed to do against an inferior opponent: put the game away early and leave no doubt.
