Grades: Spurs Close Perfect Preseason With Win Over Pacers
Wemby dominates, Castle impresses, and Champagnie stays hot as San Antonio closes preseason 5-0.
The San Antonio Spurs didn’t just wrap up the preseason — they made a statement.
San Antonio used a balanced scoring attack as they defeated the Indiana Pacers 133–104 at Frost Bank Center on Friday night, closing out preseason play with a perfect 5-0 record.
Yes, it’s the preseason, sure. However, you can already see the beginnings of something big taking shape: a stronger, sharper, and much more confident young Spurs team than the one that stumbled and struggled last season.
“I think we’ve had some good moments,” Spurs Head Coach Mitch Johnson said of his team’s performance in the preseason. “I think there’s still a lot left to be desired… we’ve shown some glimpses and potential. But there’s still quite a bit we need to shore up.”
Here are three grades from Friday’s win:
Victor Wembanyama: A+
After two years of Wemby living on the three-point line and fans wondering why he was not inside the paint more, Wembanyama is taking on that challenge as he enters year three.
The French big man finished Friday’s contest with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocks while barely breaking a sweat.
We all know Wemby can score and anchor the paint, but what was truly impressive about his preseason was how in control he looked. He is posting up more often and playing through contact; clearly, he is back to his old self after missing the second half of last season with a blood clot.
